Greetings FEWnet friends,
Thank you to the nearly 200 women who joined
us for our annual FEWnet event in May. What a
truly "electric" evening, filled with thought
provoking words by Julie Gilbert and plenty
of good networking among old and new friends.
We are actively building three new small
groups based on interest we've received from
attendees, so please contact Melissa at mmlakar@certespros.com

As you will read in this month's Member
Spotlight, FEWnet small groups provide a
unique opportunity to build both your contact
and knowledge base with other women in
finance and accounting. We recently got to
"practice what we preach" when small group
member, Becky Wagenbach, shared that her
company had office space to sublease. Certes
was able to quickly negotiate a deal and has
been thrilled with our new space in the
Colonnade building. Plus, our neighbors at
Pentair have been wonderful throughout the
process! Some small groups have also changed
it up this summer with happy hours at a
member's house, so these professional
communities also offer a lot of fun!
As a member of FEWnet, you will most likely
agree that networking is a critical skill
that needs to be encouraged and developed at
all professional levels. That is why we
weren't surprised to see in a recent KPMG
survey that 64% of young professionals are
concerned about social networking
opportunities available with their current
employer. Please think about referring your
senior level female financial executive staff
members and friends to get involved in FEWnet. If
you manage finance and accounting staff with
up to ten years of experience, direct them to
our young professionals group called Nextworking.
Full of content and contacts, our networking
groups are just another way that Certes
supports the finance and accounting industry,
ensuring a strong profession for years to come.

Sandy Sponem
Sandy Sponem is the CFO of M. A.
Mortenson Company, one of the
nation's largest contractors and the 38th
largest general builder in the country. Her
primary responsibilities include overseeing
accounting, financial reporting, treasury,
tax, planning and analysis, and executive
benefit plans.
Sandy is a Badger through and through, having
grown up in Madison, Wisconsin, as well as
earning both her Bachelor's
degree in Accounting and Master's degree in
Finance from her hometown, Big 10 school. No
stranger to working at fast growth,
industry-leading organizations, Sandy cut her
teeth at Deloitte and Touche before
transitioning to industry roles with Dayton
Hudson Corporation and Piper Jaffray
Companies, Inc.
With over a year under her belt with M. A.
Mortenson, Sandy is excited about the
challenges of leading an accounting and
financial support function that can keep pace
with business growth. We were thrilled to
have the opportunity to get to know more
about the company and financial leadership
behind some of the highest profile
construction projects currently underway in
the Twin Cities.

Recession-like economies are a good time to
start looking at things again, like what we
are doing with our lives. The reality is that
some of us, including partners or spouses,
will lose our jobs and the rest of us will
have to cut back on spending for awhile. In
my 20's and 30's, this stuff scared me. It
took me years to learn that I would continue
to lose things throughout my life and it
really doesn't hurt...that much. As long as
your spirit and support network (i.e. friends
and family) stay intact, you can get through
anything. I promise!
