“The true value of FEWnet has been the opportunity to network with so many talented, bright, and outstanding professionals.”

Risky Business

After the economic turmoil of 2009, many of us are still trying to catch our breath. However, FEWnet members are continuing to keep high-risk areas of business at the forefront of their minds. Key areas being discussed at recent small group meetings include:

  • Strategic change management
  • Staffing
  • Compensation plans
  • Human resources
  • Fraud
  • Innovation/R&D
  • Third-party relationships
  • Shared services
  • Inflation/deflation
  • Tax management

The Rules of Job Security

  • Get out of your bunker. This is not the time to put your head down and ignore the larger picture at your company. Many of us are balancing multiple, changing priorities, so it’s important to check in with our bosses often and keep in the loop on what projects to fast-track.
  • Network with purpose. Forget mass schmoozing and target your efforts toward meeting and getting contact information for at least three people who can truly help your career. Some FEWnet members are scheduling time into their Outlook for event follow up.
  • Stay on top of industry-changing technologies. If you’re feeling like a technological dinosaur, it’s not too late to catch up. Think about the problems that keep executives at your company up at night, look outside your company and industry for technological solutions, and build some regular time into your schedule to learn them —ideally by stepping up for projects at work where you can develop your knowledge.
  • Start working toward a career change – NOW. If you need help setting a job search strategy, give Certes a call. Known for being an industry leader in senior level financial staffing, we’re here to help when you’re ready for us!

The IFRS Conversation Continues

Start now, treat IFRS as an opportunity, and get everyone on board are three of the common themes that came out of our FEWnet Technical Breakfast this past Fall and it continues to be the talk of our monthly FEWnet small groups too. For those unable to attend the event, the AICPA recently published an article that very much echoes our members own words. Read it here.
